Sites that contain heavy JavaScript, frames, Flash intros or Flash pages, and dynamic pages can be poorly indexed online, or not indexed at all. Another reason for low or non-qualified traffic is having a poor selection of keyword phrases for a site (or having no keyword phrases). When choosing keywords and optimizing a website for search engines, you have to understand how the search engines work and how people are searching, and place yourself in appropriate areas through improving site design and pursuing search engine optimization.

Should I do SEO work myself or should I hire a SEO company?

The answer to this question involves three factors
- How much time you have to spend with SEO
- How much is your interest on the subject
- How much money you can invest with SEO
Doing it wrong can get your website banned from certain engines or make it have a very poor visibility. You can either hire someone to do this work in-house, or choose a SEO company. Either way, the chances are that you will get the results you were looking for and usually quicker than doing it yourself.

What kind of guarantee can I get if I hire out this work?

Anyone who guarantees a particular ranking on a search engine is making a promise that no one can keep. No one can do it. Some people may have a better understanding of how search engines work, therefore getting you better rankings, but they still will not be able to guarantee a position. The best way to research a company's effectiveness is to ask for references and then call the clients and ask pertinent questions about their goals and their satisfaction with the firm.

How important it is to use search engines to promote my website?

Each market determines how people find new websites. People can find your website by using search engines, word of mouth, a link from another site, additional online marketing activities, or offline resources such as newspaper, magazine, TV, which can be expensive and not always yield the results you were hoping for. Ideally, your company should use all methods mentioned above to some degree or another.

How can I be #1 when someone types in the word...?

If your goal is to be #1 for anything, you are probably going to drive yourself mad, especially for a general word such as 'car', 'travel' or 'ski.' Get specific! You will not only get better placement, but you will also get more qualified traffic. Choose a phrase - not a single word. Most people don't search on single words any more as they return too many results. So if you have a ski resort, aim for specific phrases such as where your ski resort is located or what it offers. However, don't forget to do your key phrase research because you want to appear under terms people are actually searching.

Why am I listed on some search engines but not on others…?

There are very few free search engines. Most engines are partners with other engines and chances are you are overlooking a partner engine when you are not appearing where you think you should. Paid placements can help your website to gain more visibility – if it is optimized of course. ;o)

Why doesn't Yahoo! Directory list my site?

Commercial websites need to pay $299 annually to be in Yahoo! But to make sure they don't keep the submission fee and still reject the site, be sure there are no 'under construction' pages, no misspellings, and sites absolutely must be submitted to the correct category.

What are the most common mistakes people make about SEO?

Lack of focus. Companies want to come up when people type in a lot of different phrases, so they list 30 words in their meta tags. Invariably this dilutes the site and they don't rank well on any words. If you have thirty words that you really want to rank well on, you should divide them up over 15 or 30 pages of your site and theme the content around your words and like-combinations of them. It sounds complicated, doesn’t it? That is why we are in business. ;o)
