The Foundation - Basic Search Engine Optimization Services - Overview

This article is a continuation of a series that addresses the basics of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). In the most recent article we explored the importance of having a professional SEO company to handle your SEO campaign. Now we will explore why SEO plans should come before a website design.

SEO Comes First, Website Design and Development is Second

The common attitude is that a SEO campaign begins after the website is online. For website owners not familiar with Search Engine Optimization, this seems to make sense. However, to effectively design, develop and market your website with search engines, a SEO campaign should be take place before the site is designed and developed.

The basic fundamentals of SEO are to develop a website that complies with search engines algorithms and to make a website search engine friendly. It is done by choosing the right file format; developing databases that are search engine friendly; using static pages to rank well and function as landing pages; using alternative navigation that search engine robots can follow the links; staying away from overusing frames, Flash, dynamic pages and any other form of “unfriendly files”. This will ensure that the site is well indexed for the target keywords, giving it good rankings and making it easy for users to find the site when searching for related keywords online.

Basic SEO Services

To be effective, Search Engine Optimization and Marketing must include the basic services listed below, which are classified as ten distinct services:

  • Website Analysis: complete review of the website to detect potential problems that might cause search engines not to index the pages properly
  • Keyword Search Analysis: identifies target market, search terms and online competitors
  • Website Content: search engine copyright is important for good visibility and conversions
  • Title and Meta Tags: used by search engines to classify content and display on SERPs (search engines results pages)
  • Link Building Campaign: associates your website with partners for better exposure
  • Landing Pages: pages that visitors first “land” on after searching for a product or service
  • Pay Per Click: sponsored ads displayed usually on the right column of a SERPs
Paid Search: paid inclusion on a online directory
  • Monthly Visibility Report: shows rankings of the keywords used on a SEO campaign on top search engines
  • Monthly Visitors Report: shows stats on visitors, referrals sites and keywords used

Whichever SEO company you choose, they should provide you with a list of services offered during SEO setup and monthly maintenance. Be aware that Search Engine Optimization is not a one time deal; it is a continuous service that must be performed on at least a monthly basis if it is to achieve the desired effect. That effect is to increase site visibility, website traffic and conversion.

Summary: This is a quick overview of the basic services provided on SEO, things to avoid when building a search engine friendly website and the services offered in an average SEO package. Next week we will look at each of the basic services that are listed above in more detail.
